The Soviet Union (USSR) officially disbanded on December 26, 1991, following a series of events including economic stagnation, growing nationalist movements, and a failed coup attempt in August 1991 that weakened central control under leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev resigned on December 25, 1991, the Soviet flag was lowered from the Kremlin, and the USSR broke into 15 independent countries.
