The College of Arms is the official heraldic authority for England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and much of the Commonwealth. It was founded in 1484, and the present building dates from after the Great Fire of London in 1666. Heralds, originally army staff officers, organize state ceremonies, grant and control armorial bearings, and research family trees. The College maintains official registers of arms, pedigrees, genealogies, and flags.
